Despite many pupils and teachers not making it to school because of the floods, those who did, enjoyed dressing up for Children in Need. There was a competition for the best ‘Pudsey’ and many other children wore non uniform and contributed to the fund too. Cameron, Drife and Eleanor were the ‘Pudsey’ winners and thanks go to Mrs Splaine, who kindly judged the competition, and all the mums who weren’t given a lot of time to create the costumes! Well done to Dalry Playgroup who brought over their cakes to sell and made lots of money for Children in Need too. They were yummy!

As part of our Mail Delivery topic, Mr Goodwin, who is the school’s IT technician, kindly offered to talk to P1/2/3 about the first stamp and how the postage system started. We learnt that James Chambers, who was Scottish, introduced the idea of the first adhesive stamp. Mr Goodwin showed us his stamp album, including three Penny Black stamps. The children have also been designing some of their own stamps.

Mr Murray came to tell us about the day in the life of a shopkeeper. The children looked at photos on the interactive whiteboard of his Organic Body Care Shop and were able to get an insight into how a shop runs. They were told about the different types of products and how cutomers can buy them on line too. Mr Murray has a very busy day, so we are very grateful that he took time to come to Dalry School.

As part of our Careers’ Week, the children invited PC Bruton to speak to them about his work. The children found out that policemen are not always catching robbers and that there are many other jobs that a ploiceman has to do. The new recruits are PC Green and PC Johnstone and they found that the protective waistcoats are very heavy indeed! Many thanks to PC Bruton for making time to visit P1/2/3 and answering all their questions.

On Friday afternoon, after the Harvest Festival, all the children were involved in delivering harvest gift bags to some of the villagers in Dalry. Each group of children had a different area to visit and the staff would like to thank the parents who volunteered to help supervise the children.

The end of another gardening season! Despite the disappointing weather, the garden club members managed to harvest all of the above produce – potatoes, onions, beetroot, turnips and an abundance of leeks. They made a lovely display on the Harvest Table . Well done to all of you. Many thanks to Miss Tranter, Mrs. Wallace and Mr. Johnston who helped Mrs. Porteous with the Garden Club.

Every Primary One child in Scotland received a blue book bag containing a ‘Mr. Big’ book by Ed Vere. This is a gift from the education and publishing company, Pearson. Joseph, Eleanor and Andrew look delighted with their books.

John Wheeler, who is a local storyteller, came to tell us a true story about a rocking horse called Dobbin, which was later stolen. Fortunately, the story had a happy ending and John was finally reunited with Dobbin. John also played a tune on his Penny Whistle, so many thanks for entertaining us.

This year, we are pleased to have Cameron and Aiden to represent P1, 2 & 3 on the Pupil Council and Annabelle and Charlotte to represent P1,2 & 3 on the Eco Committee. Cameron and Annabelle held the posts last year too and I am sure they will help Aiden and Charlotte in their new roles. Well done to all of you and we look forward to hearing your reports from the meetings.
